Angama means ‘suspended in mid-air’ which is drawn from the lodge’s location, sitting on top of the Oloololo escarpment, which forms part of the Great Rift Valley. Here there are two totally separate and very intimate camps of fifteen tented-suites, each looking down over the open grasslands of the spectacular Mara Triangle. Perfect for couples and with several family suites perfect for children aged over six.
All dining at Angama Mara is private with numerous exciting and varied a la carte options. With no fixed meal-times dining is very flexible. The two Guest Areas are designed so that guests can be social or have space and privacy should they prefer. Special dining experiences include bush picnic breakfasts and lunches, as well as Angama Mara’s signature Bush BBQ, which is not to be missed. Guests can also book a private lunch in the Shamba – a beautifully designed 1-acre kitchen garden where you will enjoy a long and lazy garden-to-fork lunch with great wines, sharing plates and cheeses. Guests can also have a private picnic on the famous Out of Africa Kopje (hill) overlooking the plains below
Your safari day is tailor-made by your expert guide whose knowledge of the Maasai Mara is sure to enhance the incredible year-round wildlife viewing. The Mara Triangle is home to abundant resident- game as well as the world-famous Migration and the iconic Big Five. With a maximum of six guests on a shared safari vehicle, the days are yours to plan as you please.
The team at Angama Mara strive every day to strike the perfect balance of adventure in the Maasai Mara by day, offset by romance and comfort at night. Just a short 10-minute drive from the lodge, guests enter the Mara Triangle bursting with spectacular wildlife, and on return to the lodge at night, guests spend their evenings stargazing from the fireside of Angama Mara’s iconic baraza.
The tented suites are spacious, all hanging over the edge of the Great Rift Valley and all commanding incredible views over the Mara below. The tented suite’s aesthetic is paired down luxury with the guest’s comfort at the forefront of the design. A key feature of each tented suite is the 11m floor-to-ceiling glass fronts as well as the two red rocking chairs on each deck – here guests can spend down time on a rocking chair safari, gazing through the in-tent binoculars at the wildlife below.
Over and above going on safari, guests can enjoy the rim-flow swimming pool, the Fitness Room, Safari Shop and Maasai Design Studio, where women from the local communities sit and do bespoke beading for guests. Angama Mara recently opened a Photographic Studio where guests have access to state-of-the-art editing software, photographic tutorials from the in-house wildlife photographer as well as camera rentals. Angama Mara also offers in-tent massages on your private deck to get rid of those well-known safari knots.
Angama Mara has taken a somewhat alternative approach to making a difference to the communities and conservation initiatives that neighbour the lodge. Angama Mara requests that each one of their guests contributes $10 per guest per night to the Angama Foundation. The Foundation, which has been built on the core values of Benjamin Franklin’s ‘Doing Well by Doing Good and Doing Good by Doing Well’, then invests the full $10 donation into projects comprising of three main fields: Education, Healthcare and Conservation.
Since it’s inception the Foundation has built a community clinic which looks after Angama Mara staff, guests and 25,000 Maasai community members; built classrooms, teachers accommodation, an Early Childhood Development Centre and ablution facilities at a neighbouring school; donated a vehicle to the anti-rhino poaching unit of the Mara Conservancy and funds an ongoing human-wildlife conflict compensation programme between Maasai and predators who hunt their livestock, to name a few. The Angama Foundation’s philosophy of micro-donations and scalable projects has evidently made a vast difference in the few short years since the lodge opened.
The Angama team take care of each and every guest with incredible warmth and pride. Angama Mara is the epitome of years of the very best safari experience coming together to create something truly unique.
Access is incredibly easy with numerous scheduled flights arriving at Angama Mara’s Airfield which is only a 3 minute drive from the lodge.
One of my favourite experiences at Angama Mara is waking up to the hot air balloon safaris from the two nearby operators floating past my glass-fronted tent and watching them glide along the Mara River at sunrise.
There is now also a very exciting exclusive use mobile camp of just four tents. Angama Safari Camp is located about an hour’s drive from Angama Mara, tucked down in a very special area of the Mara Triangle towards the Serengeti border where there are very few other cars. In migration time you will be surrounded by the mega herds of wildebeest and zebra and will be out early and back late enjoying this pristine area almost exclusively to yourselves. As always Angama are offering something totally unique, the style of Angama Safari Camp is unlike anything else in East Africa and is just what East Africa has been waiting for.
With year-round special offers, Angama Mara is the holiday of lifetime for all guests.Watch the video Year round game viewing.
